Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s Seacoast Family Care Services is providing expectant mothers a new birthing option starting January 1, 2017. Women expecting a child will now have the option for a VBAC – a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC), also known as Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC). Portsmouth Regional Hospital is the only Seacoast hospital offering VBAC with 24/7 in-house obstetric, anesthesia and operating room services from admission to birth.

Why: Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s Seacoast Family Care Services will be offering a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC), also known as Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC) beginning January 1, 2017. Portsmouth Regional Hospital is committed to providing a safe environment for our mothers attempting a VBAC. The hospital will follow the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network’s (NNEPQUIN) recommendations and guidelines for this service.

According to ACOG – in addition to fulfilling a patient’s preference for vaginal delivery, at an individual level VBAC is associated with decreased maternal morbidity and a decreased risk of complications in future pregnancies.
