Bone density screening (DEXA)

Bone density screening, also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), or bone densitometry, is an enhanced X-ray that measures bone loss. At Portsmouth Regional Hospital, we offer the Hologic bone densitometer, the most accurate method available for diagnosing bone density loss.

A DEXA scan is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that generally affects women after menopause but may also be found in men. Bone density screening assesses your risk for developing fractures. A DEXA screening is a simple, quick and noninvasive procedure that needs no anesthesia. The amount of radiation used is extremely small—less than one-tenth the dose of a standard X-ray and less than a day's exposure to natural radiation.

Your or your doctor can call (603) 559-4190 for more information or to schedule your bone density screening.

Stereotactic biopsy

Stereotactic biopsy is a procedure that assists in the diagnosis of cancerous cells in breast tissue. During this procedure, a radiologist uses images of the breast tissue to take a sample for testing. This is less invasive than a surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and helps evaluate tiny masses not visible on an ultrasound. All biopsies are offered on an outpatient basis and are available for same-day appointments.
